Anchorage Hillside mail thief pleads guilty

Federal prosecutors say an Anchorage man who stole mail from boxes on the Hillside pleaded guilty Wednesday to criminal charges.

Evan Mullen, 28, faces charges of mail theft and credit card fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors say Mullen started stealing mail from mailboxes in the neighborhood in December 2015. He continued to do so until the day before his arrest in February.

"Mullen was specifically looking for credit cards, but Mullen also stole packages from these mailboxes," according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Aunnie Steward. He used the credit cards to buy gift cards and other items, obtaining about $8,600, she said. Another $1,400 in transactions weren't successful.

Steward said she has prosecuted several similar cases and the suspects often work with other people. There is mention of Mullen getting help from another person, who hasn't been publicly charged, she said.

Mullen could get up to 15 years in prison. His sentencing is set for July 21.
