The 49th Estate: Hollis French's home base

The 49th Estate is our answer to MTV's "Cribs," a weekly tour of Alaska homes and interviews with their owners.

The home of Hollis French, a longtime state senator and now candidate for governor, is a collection of various interests. Filled with spontaneously purchased art, history and law books, and outdoor gear, French's home was until recently also his campaign headquarters -- his manager worked out of the basement and French worked upstairs in the living room.

French's office is a place to work and to enjoy some of his indoor hobbies. French says he often listens to music -- either records or CDs -- while working or reading. His CD collection fills one bookshelf while his books fill a couple more.

Being next to the Coastal Trail, French cross country skis regularly. He also climbs and hikes. He has climbed many of the Alaska peaks, summiting Denali twice (once with his wife). He says he has little desire to climb elsewhere as there are so many mountains close to Anchorage he hasn't climbed.

Each week, The 49th Estate takes a look inside a different Alaska home. Alaska Dispatch does not endorse the views or opinions expressed by the subjects of these videos. If you have an interesting Alaska home you think we'd like to see, e-mail thomas(at)alaskadispatch.com.
