AHFC making $7.6 million available to build Juneau apartments

In an effort to ease a housing crunch in Juneau, the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) will make $7.6 million in federal grant funds and federal low-income housing tax credits available to spur construction of new rental units in Alaska's capital city next year.

"There is simply not enough housing in Juneau, and the fire at the Gastineau (Apartments) that destroyed 41 units has magnified the problem," AHFC executive director Dan Fauske said in a press release. "AHFC is working to offer reasonably priced housing options. It is important to Juneau, Southeast Alaska and the whole state that we move quickly."

"Affordable housing remains a critical need for many Alaskans," added Gov. Sean Parnell. "AHFC has long been known for its ability to 'make it happen.' My office has been working with Dan and his staff to bring solutions to the ongoing challenges."

The Alaska Housing Finance Corporation is a public corporation that offers home financing programs, energy efficiency and home weatherization programs as well as public housing. Since 1986, AHFC has contributed $1.9 billion to the state's general fund.

AHFC is seeking pre-applications through Jan. 28. The best of those will be asked for full proposals by May, with construction expected to begin this summer. New residents should be able to move in sometime duing 2014. More information is on the AHFC website here. under the heading "Grant Funding Availability."
