Alaska education, doing more with less

Saying that the non-profit Southwest Alaska Vocational Education Center in King Salmon "might be Alaska's best kept secret," the Bristol Bay Times details the center's methods, equipment, and impact on the region. In brief classes designed to give students in-demand skills, the center hopes to stem the tide of rural flight by giving people lucrative means to stay. Although the center offers its own classes, the totally wired classrooms are set up to allow industry to deliver instruction as well. The article also details how computer technology is in place, but is limited by low-bandwidth infrastructure common to much of rural Alaska. Students could video-conference with experts all over the world for want of a few megabits. Read more here.
