Good news, snow-weary Alaskans. The state Department of Public Safety has extended the deadline for having your studded tires removed.

Alaskans now have until May 1 to keep those studded tires on the road, according to a press release issued Friday. The previous deadline for some communities had been April 15.

"The order extends the studded tire season deadline due to poor road conditions," DPS Commissioner Joseph Masters said in the statement. "The extension should provide all motorists that additional margin of safety on lingering winter roads. This extension should also show that the State of Alaska is concerned enough to remain flexible in deadlines to best ensure the safey on roads."

After May 1, Alaskans driving on studs could face a "correctable ticket" with a $50 fine.
