'Alaska Food Challenge': Eating mostly local for a year

Anchorage Daily News columnist Julia O'Malley visited recently with an Anchorage couple who have pledged to eat only local products for an entire year as part of the "Alaska Food Challenge." Midtown residents Matt Oster and Saskia Esslinger, one month into their challenge, are working hard and doing just fine now amid summer's bounty. But, says Oster, "Come talk to us next May or June," when the cellar will be at its lowest and new garden crops won't be ready yet. Esslinger and Oster have made of the most extreme pledges in the Alaska Food Challenge, but around 30 others have joined the effort that began on summer solstice. Read much, much more and see some shots of Oster and Esslinger's rocking urban garden, here, and learn even more from their blog.
