Alaska high school students eligible for study expeditions in Greenland

High school sophomores and juniors with a strong interest in natural sciences are eligible to apply for full funded studies in Greenland in June and July 2013.

The 2013 Joint Science Education Project is a two-part program, including the Kangerlussauq Science Field School, sponsored by the government of Greenland, and the US-led Science Education Week, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Applications and information are online here.

The Kangerlussauq Science Field School tentatives dates are Jun 29 through July 11, 2013. Students will learn about and participate in Arctic science with the assistance of researchers and teachers at field stations around Kangerlussuaq, Greenland.

The Science Education Week, with tentative dates are July 12-20, 2013, will offer a subset of students the opportunity to continue their exploration by traveling to and experiencing science at the top of the Greenlandic ice sheet.

The program is physically demanding, with hikes to glaciers, lakes and other sites.

There is no cost to students except for incidentals and any clothing they plan to wear. Extreme cold weather outerwear is provided, but clothing underneath it is not. Students also will need sturdy hiking boots and rain gear.
