In the last 50 years, Alaskans have all but stopped growing food locally: today, 95 percent of the state's food supply comes from Outside. On Thursday, Alaska Public Radio Network will broadcast a talk given by Tlingit Chef Rob Kineen, a star on the local food scene, that's aimed at the art of eating locally.
The talk, recorded Oct. 4 at the Anchorage Museum's Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center, will explore the burgeoning local food movement here and suggest ways that Alaska restaurants can bring local-produced food back to the table.
Kineen will spotlight several in-state Alaska food upstarts and share recent creations, including some modern dishes built from traditional ingredients. (Think muktuk sushi!)
Kineen has worked at Seven Glaciers at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, The Crow's Nest in Anchorage and Emeril Lagasse's NOLA restaurant in New Orleans.
