Alaska Pollock certified sustainable

According to the Cordova Times, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute has announced that the state's Pollock fishery has been certified sustainable according to standards set by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization.

The new certification, conducted by the international auditing firm Global Trust, marks the fourth of the state's fisheries to be certified sustainable according to international standards.

Alaska's salmon, halibut and black cod (sablefish) fisheries have already been deemed sustainable, and its crab fishery is currently undergoing the certification process.

It is unclear what impact the new certification will have on Pollock processors' marketing ability, but ASMI said that the certification "demonstrates responsible management for the sustainable use of the fisheries and is a realistic and tangible communication for this standard and process."
