Alaska State Troopers boost DUI patrols through holiday season

The Alaska State Troopers, in an effort to ensure Alaskans safely enjoy the holidays, plan to have their eyes extra peeled for impaired motorists, aggressive driving, speeders, texters and seatbelt avoiders, according to a trooper press release.

The focused enforcement is intended to prevent collisions, injuries and fatalities on roads and highways throughout the states. According to troopers, the "enhanced patrols," which began Dec. 12, will continue through Jan. 1.

Since the beginning of the campaign troopers have arrested 14 drivers on misdemeanor DUI charges, responded to 100 REDDI (Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately) reports, charged 14 drivers with driving with a suspended or revoked license, responded to 85 damage-only crashes, responded to 14 injury crashes and one fatal collision.

Troopers encourage Alaskan motorists to "make smart choices this season," especially if drinking is on the agenda. Troopers advise alcohol consumers have "a plan to get home safely," like taking a taxi or having a sober driver operate your vehicle.

If you're out this holiday and you suspect a motorist of driving under the influence troopers ask you to call 9?1?1.
