Alaskans may be impacted by nationwide nut butter recall

Fears of salmonella contamination have prompted state of Alaska officials to issue a public statement warning consumers that Sunland brand nut butters, including almond, peanut and cashew, are currently being recalled. Products with a manufacture date between May 1, 2012 and Sept. 24, 2012 are affected by the recall, according to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.

When consumed by humans, Salmonella often causes serious and uncomfortable illness and, occasionally, fatal infections in children and the elderly. Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning include fever, diarrhea, bloody stool, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of Salmonella should contact their healthcare provider.

If you have purchased any of the Sunland nut butters above, do not consume them. The DEC encourages you to dispose of or return the items to the place of purchase for a refund. For further information contact Sunland at 1-800-837-1018, 575-356-6638 or visit the FDA's announcement here.

So far there have been no illnesses related to Sunland Inc.'s recall reported in the state of Alaska. There have, however, been 29 cases reported in the Lower 48. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers a helpful website on salmonella that among other things educates consumers about how to handle food safely.
