Alaska's scenic highways receive federal cash infusion

Precious little asphalt paves Alaska but what highways do exist in the 49th state are among the most scenic to be found anywhere in the U.S.

Four of Alaska's six National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads just got a federal boost to maintain their natural, historic, cultural and recreational endowments -- qualities that entice tourists from across the continent to pack up motor-homes and head north.

A total of $714,157 in grants will be divvied among the Southcentral and Southeast roadways, according to a statement by the Alaska Scenic Byways program.

  • $154,057 for a wildlife viewing tower on the Glenn Highway near Palmer Hay Flats State Game Refuge
  • $184,000 for new restrooms and other construction at the Picture Point Wayside Rest on the Haines Highway
  • $129,200 for Iditarod National Historic Trailhead signs along the Seward Highway
  • $246,500 for repairs to the waterfront boardwalk at the Seldovia Gateway of the Alaska Marine Highway System
