Aleutian towns moving on energy plans

According to Alaska Newspapers Inc. (via The Dutch Harbor Fisherman), six months ago, a group of Aleutian entities met to figure out how to reduce the region's reliance on expensive fossil fuels in favor of more readily available renewable energy resources. Although the broad goal is to reduce energy costs to spur economic development, a long-term goal was set to reduce fossil fuel consumption by 85 percent over the next decade. Since then, several communities along the Chain are taking steps toward that goal, and a regional co-operative for bulk fuel may reduce petroleum costs in the near-term. The group also has a website up now, which can be found, here. Read more, here.
