Anchorage Assembly bans sidewalk sitting

According to numerous sources Wednesday morning, the Anchorage Assembly passed an ordinance Tuesday night that bans sitting or lying down on public sidewalks in Downtown Anchorage.

According to KTUU-TV, the ban passed 7-4, with Assembly members Dick Traini, Debbie Ossiander, Ernie Hall, Bill Starr, Adam Trombley, Jennifer Johnston and Chris Birch voting in favor and Paul Honeman, Elvi Gray-Jackson, Harriet Drummond and Patrick Flynn voting against.

The ordinances approved Tuesday night is a modified version of the original proposal from Mayor Dan Sullivan last summer. The new ordinance keeps the exceptions from the original, but expands the hours of the ban.

The ordinance also sets stricter limits on panhandling, banning it entirely downtown, and restricting it to non-daylight hours in the rest of the Municipality.
