According to the Anchorage Daily News, city recreation officials have closed the state's most-used disc golf course to casual public use for this and all foreseeable summers.
Staff of the city's parks and recreation department last week pulled up all the baskets and posted signs that the course at Westchester Lagoon would be closed for "rehabilitation" throughout the summer of 2012. They plan to add topsoil and grass seed.
But the main reason for the closure is a record of complaints that course users have not been very considerate in recent seasons.
"We had a lot of trouble with people drinking and making a lot of noise and the neighbors didn't like it too much," said Anchorage Police Department spokesman Lt. Dave Parker.
Last August, the city posted an online survey asking for feedback about the course, and it only received about 30 responses. Apparently they were enough.
Fans of the course are upset about the closure and say the bad apples who caused the problems at Westchester will just appear at other courses.
Matt Forney, the former president of the Alaska Disc Golf Association, said he's disappointed by the move and that the public process leading to the closure didn't seem all that public to him.
"I sure as heck didn't receive notification of this public meeting," Forney said.
