Anchorage welcomes massive new sculpture

According to many outlets this morning, a massive new sculpture was installed in Downtown Anchorage last weekend. According to the Anchorage Daily News, Antony Gormley, one of the most renowned public artists alive, designed the massive, seated humanoid figure to anchor the site of the Anchorage Museum expansion, and Alaskan metal fabricators made it real. A crowd of about 200 people gathered to see the statue being hoisted into place. Read much more from the scene, here. Alaska Beat's favorite part was hearing that Gormley unintentionally got a few laughs from the crowd when he said that the statue would be a good fit in the city because "Anchorage is a pragmatic city. In no way is it self-centered about its design." If you're interested in the new installation from an aesthetic standpoint, read a recent ADN art column for additional perspective (especially if you're an educated boor, like this dude).
