Bethel police officer shoots, kills man

According to Alaska State Troopers, a police officer in the Southwest Alaska community of Bethel shot and killed a man Tuesday night.

Troopers were called in to assist following the incident around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday. Few details were immediately available, but troopers reported that the shooting was the result of a call about a disturbance at a residence. The officer involved in the shooting was a member of the Bethel Police Department.

The man's body is expected to be transported to the State Medical Examiner's office in Anchorage for an autopsy. The officer and the victim's names had not been released as of about 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Alaska Bureau of Investigations arrived at about 6 a.m. Wednesday to look into the shooting.

Bethel is a community of about 6,200 people about 400 miles from Anchorage accessible only by air or water.
