Casting call out for new Alaska reality show on military life

Craig MedredAlaska Dispatch

If you're an "Army wife," whose husband is an active-duty member of the armed services and who happens to be stationed in Alaska, a new reality show to be filmed in the state may be looking for you.

The production company 44 Blue Productions, in cooperation with U.S. Army Alaska, is holding casting calls here for an upcoming series, titled "Army Wives of Alaska," according to an Army press release.

From the release:

Does your husband or wife serve in the Army in the Anchorage or Fairbanks area?  When you hear the word “deployment”, does it mean more to you than just a word heard on the evening news?  Do you find strength and community from other Army spouses while your loved one is serving our country?  If so, we would like to hear your story.

44 Blue Productions has produced numerous other cable TV reality programs, including Animal Planet's "Pit Bulls and Parolees," and Spike TV's "Deadliest Warrior." Producers will meet with potential cast members on Nov. 28, the release said.

According to Chuck Canterbury, media relations officer with U.S. Army Alaska, the casting -- despite the show's name -- isn't limited to wives of troops.

"They don't have to be a woman," Canterbury said. "The soldier could be the mother or wife, and the husband could be a civilian."

Canterbury said that the casting also won't be solely restricted to spouses whose husband or wife is deployed, noting that because casting is supposed to be finished in late November, they'll miss the deployment of 3,500 troops from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and a going-away ceremony that's slated to take place Nov. 29 at Anchorage's Sullivan Arena.

Canterbury said that filming will likely begin in late February, and the "docuseries" time will be divided between soldiers and their families at JBER and Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks. Canterbury estimated that there will be 10-12 episodes in the series, with each episode taking about a week to film.
