Coast Guard tracking Japan tsunami 'ghost ship' heading for Alaska

According to The Canadian Press (via Global Edmonton), a rusted, uncrewed, 177-foot fishing boat cast adrift by the Japan tsunami in March 2011 is floating off the British Columbia coast and appears headed toward Alaska.

Officials say the vessel was a squid boat, named Oshawa Seamount and based out of Hokkaido, Japan.

U.S. Coast Guard personnel from Alaska marked the vessel Sunday with a tracking tag which will allow constant, real-time location data to be gathered.

So far, the ship is off the coast of of Haida Gwaii, and appears headed for Dixon Entrance, a key concern.

Both U.S. and Canadian officials are in the monitoring and evaluation stage, and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter is being sent this week to assess the condition of the ship.

A maritime advisory, a notice to shipping, has been issued for traffic near the drifting vessel.
