Eagle attacks frighten Unalaskans

According to KUCB-Radio (Unalaska, via APRN), residents of Unalaska Island are being attacked by nesting bald eagles more often than they're accustomed to this summer. Some people have even been wounded, though not seriously. The birds are truly numerous on the Aleutian island, some nesting very close to areas of human activity. So until officials can find a way to address the problem, residents are left to fend for themselves. Federal law prohibits disturbing bald eagle nests or injuring an eagle in self defense, but the word from one wildlife official is that folks could start wearing hard hats, paying greater attention to their surroundings, or even start carrying sticks to distract or deflect swooping eagles.
