FirstEnergy Executive Testifies on Success of Competitive Electricity Markets Before Ohio House Committee

AKRON, Ohio, Oct. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Leila L. Vespoli, executive vice president and general counsel for Akron, Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), today provided testimony on the success of competitive electricity markets to the Ohio House of Representatives Public Utilities Committee.  In her remarks, Vespoli testified that Ohio has created an effective structure for providing customers with lower electricity prices through the competitive markets established a decade ago under Senate Bill 3.  

"Competitive markets deliver the lowest prices over the long term to customers, and the proof is undeniable," said Vespoli.  "Right now, more than 2.3 million Ohioans – including more than 200,000 businesses – are saving money as a result of competition in the wholesale and retail markets.  In addition, more than 40 registered retail suppliers in Ohio stand ready to bring additional savings to customers."

Vespoli cautioned, however, that certain utility proposals have the potential to undermine these markets and drive up prices for certain customer groups.  Specifically, measures that restrict shopping or subsidize one generator of electricity over another are throw-backs to monopoly regulation.  Such efforts that pick "winners and losers" in the energy market would create obstacles to private investment in generation and increase prices for customers.

"These and other restrictions can only undermine competitive markets that already are bringing significant savings to customers in Ohio.  Simply put, we have the right structure in place.  Rather than creating new obstacles to competitive markets, lawmakers and regulators should build on efforts such as governmental aggregation that are already delivering lower electricity prices for Ohioans."
