Fish Creek's youth-only sports fishery opens this weekend

From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the Mat-Su Valley's Fish Creek will be open to children and kids 15 and younger.

The Fish Creek event will take place off Mile 16 on Knik-Goose Bay Road. Fishing is allowed in the water between Alaska Fish and Game markers at the mouth of the creek and by markers a quarter-mile upstream of Kinik-Goose Bay Road.

All sport regulations remain in effect while the event takes place. Restrictions include a limited possession of salmon to three, with no more than two in a day. Youth will be allowed to fish for all species, with the exception of king salmon, which are off limits this year.

Educational activities and fishing gear will be available on sight from 9 a.m to noon Saturday. Fish Creek will be open to regular "anglers of all ages" come Aug. 11.
