Former Alaska TV news director to make big climb for charity

Ty Hardt, a former television news director turned communications director, is combining an attempt to climb the world's tallest mountain with a fundraising effort to benefit children on Alaska's North Slope. Hardt, who works for Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, is preparing for a March ascent of Mount Everest in Kathmandu, Nepal, some 5,588 miles northwest of Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. Kathmandu, a city of nearly a million residents, sits at an elevation of about 4,600 feet.

Hardt is using the adventure to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club in Barrow, on Alaska's North Slope, in addition to similar clubs around the state.

An avid climber, Hardt has tackled other big mountains, including three ascents of Mount McKinley, the tallest peak in North America. Everest dwarf's Denali by more than 8,700 feet. Everest is 29,035 feet tall; Denali is 20,328.
