While the big names showed up Sunday night to collect their primetime Emmy awards, last week a former Fairbanksan got to pick up her second. Unlike the Emmys which were awarded Sunday night to big winners like best drama winner "Homeland," and best comedy winner "Modern Family," Jill Daniels' award was juried, not nominated, meaning she knew of the win weeks ahead of time.
Daniels accepted her second Emmy for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation" at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles last Saturday according to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. She won for her background drawings on the Disney Channel cartoon "Phineas and Ferb."
She told the News-Miner it was "so special" to have her artwork selected by the jury, which is comprised of professional, peer group members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
This is the third year in a row a former Fairbanks resident has won an Emmy in the category. In 2010 Charlie Ragins, who graduated from West Valley High School, won for his background animation work on "The Simpsons" episode "Postcards from the Wedge."
Daniels and Ragins aren't the only two former Interior Alaskans to pick up big entertainment awards. Last year Ben Grossmann, who grew up in Big Delta, won an Oscar for best visual effects for his work on the Martin Scorsese directed "Hugo."
