Grant Aviation unveils air service between Unalaska and Akutan

Grant Aviation is now offering scheduled air service between Unalaska and Akutan, with daily flights available except Sundays.

Akutan Mayor Joe Bereskin said Nov. 28 that it gives residents of Akutan great peace of mind to know they have regular service for medical emergencies and to improve quality of life. "I especially want to recognize Grant Aviation, the Aleutians East Borough and Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities," he said.

The state's new airport at Akutan opened on Sept. 1 and the state is currently in the process of installing an automated weather observation system to improve operational safety in the region.

The Akutan Airport is a tremendous asset to the entire region, said Aleutians East Borough Mayor Stanley Mack. Strategically located immediately west of shipping lanes through Unimak Pass, the airport will also improve state and federal response capability to any potential shipping emergencies in this area, he said.
