Southcentral Alaska leaders and utilities are asking residents of Anchorage, Mat-Su and the Kenai Peninsula to curtail their energy use on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m., as a test of the "Energy Watch" system in place, according to a press release sent out by the Municipality of Anchorage on Monday.
The test is part of the fourth annual Energy Watch communication plan, and will help gauge how much natural gas can be saved through conservation efforts during the winter if an energy emergency were to occur.
Residents are asked to take the following steps to conserve energy during the drill:
• Set thermostat to 65 degrees in living areas and 40 in the garage.
• Lower water heater setting to "warm" or "vacation."
• Minimize usage of natural gas range.
• Postpone doing laundry and dishes.
• Turn off unnecessary lights and electronics.
An "Alaska Energy Watch" Facebook page has been set up to alert the public in the event of an energy crisis.
"As we have seen in recent months, you can never be too prepared for a disaster in Alaska. I encourage you to make a plan with your family and be equipped during extreme winter conditions." Mayor Sullivan said during his press briefing on October 24, 2012.
"With your help of conserving energy use, we can monitor gas levels and be a better prepared city."
