Hiker dies in Alaska's Brooks Range

An hiker traveling with a companion from Alaska's border with Canada to the Bering Sea died Wednesday night when he slipped off a cliff in the Brooks Range's Atigun Gorge, about 240 miles southeast of Barrow the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

The man's identity and nationality are being withheld.

His body was spotted about a mile downstream in the Atigun River, but terrain and weather prevented recovery. Searchers were continuing the recovery effort on Thursday.

The man's companion, Olaf Schooll, of Norway, called for help on a satellite phone and was evacuated by helicopter to Barrow.
