Hiker suffers spinal injuries on Mount Marathon

A hiker was injured on Mount Marathon last night, according to the Coast Guard. 20-year-old Pyper Dixon was rescued from the mountain at around 2,470 feet. He reportedly suffered spinal injuries in a fall while hiking the mountain. The Coast Guard received a call at 7:28 p.m. from the Seward Fire Department requesting a hoist capable aircraft to help medevac Dixon. The Jayhawk crew departed Cordova and arrived on the scene at 9:22 p.m., where they lowered a rescue swimmer to help prepare Dixon to be hoisted into the helicopter. Dixon and a nurse from the rescue party were safely hoisted from the mountain and flown to the Seward Airport where they were transferred to awaiting emergency medical services.
