JBER soldier killed, four others injured by Afghanistan IED

According to KTUU, military officials say an Army paratrooper deployed from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage was killed Sunday after an improvised explosive device struck the reinforced vehicle he was commanding.

30-year-old Staff Sgt. Thomas Fogarty was a member of 3rd Battalion (Airborne), 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.

Three of Fogarty's comrades were wounded in the blast.

Fogarty, originally from Alameda, California, joined the Army in 2004 and was first stationed in Alaska this January. His family has been notified, say officials.

Fogarty's unit was deployed to Afghanistan in April to replace the 4th Brigade Combat Team as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
