According to KTUU, the village of Kivalina has harvested its first beluga whale of the year. A small pod was spotted near the shore, and two men working on the seawall which protects the eroding village were allowed to take a whaling break. Whaling captain Reppi Swan and his co-worker were in the boat about 10 minutes when their prey surfaced nearby. On the phone with KTUU, Swan said that hunting belugas is unusual this time of year, that the village is usually fishing or hunting caribou right now. Read more here.
