Man plans triathlon around the world, route includes Alaska

According to The Province, of Vancouver, B.C., Dan Martin apparently thinks ordinary triathlons aren't challenging enough. Martin plans to swim, bike and run a triathlon, whose course will take him once around the world.

Martin plans to stage-swim from New York to France, then bike through Europe and Russia, and across the sea ice to Alaska. Then he'll trek to the road system and run to New York down the Alaska Highway.

The swim itself could be the first ever crossing of the Atlantic without drifting along with the current and without wearing a wetsuit. Each day, at the end of an 8-hour swim, Martin will be plucked from the water and his coordinates recorded, then he'll be placed in the same spot the next day. He expects the swim leg to take between three and four months.

He'll start his journey in May 2012.
