Man shot and killed following police standoff

Police were called to a West Anchorage apartment at 4:30 a.m. this morning after a woman called 911 and said that her husband had assaulted her, according to an Anchorage Police Department press release.

When police arrived at the 2800 block of West 31st Ave. the suspect had already barricaded himself inside the home. After officers tried to enter the suspect's apartment, he came out with a shotgun.

The APD press release said that when the suspect refused to obey the officers' commands to drop the weapon, two officers shot and killed him.

Police spokeswoman Marlene Lammers said that a large number of officers responded to the scene and were present at the shooting, but that only two officers fired their weapons.

The APD's Major Crime Scene Team was called out to process the scene.
