New trial date, competency hearing set in Hoonah cop-killing trial

According to the Juneau Empire, the trial date of 46-year-old John N. Marvin Jr., the man accused of killing two Hoonah police officers in the line of their duties in August 2010, has been moved to January 30, 2012. The trial had originally been scheduled to begin Monday.

In addition to moving the trial date, the presiding judge, Sitka Superior Court Judge David George, has ordered a second competency hearing to determine if Marvin is fit to stand trial.

Marvin is accused of shooting officers Anthony Wallace, 32, and Matthew Tokuoka, 39, to death in what authorities called an "ambush," then barricading himself and engaging in an armed standoff with Alaska State Troopers and local police.

Marvin has pleaded not guilty to two counts each of first-degree murder and weapons misconduct.
