Plane crash in Canadian Arctic kills 12

A plane crash in the high Arctic of Canada killed 12 and injured three on Saturday, raising questions about emergency response in remote Arctic regions. According to CTV News, the cause of the chartered Boeing 737 crash is still unknown, but the plane was attempting a landing on a runway in Resolute Bay before crashing into a hill. Nunavut, the northernmost territory of Canada, is comprised largely of a series of disjointed islands known as the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The CTV article said that the survivors were lucky that nearly 500 soldiers were training for a "simulated air disaster" in the area of the crash, and were able to respond quickly to help. The crash has raised questions about emergency response capabilities in the Arctic -- if the soldiers hadn't already been in the area, the level of response and the time it would have taken to reach the site may have been much worse.
