Police: Anchorage assault suspect in custody

A man wanted in a connection with a violent attack that left an Anchorage woman "clinging to life in a ditch" earlier this week has turned himself in.

Bukurim Miftari, 21, made contact with police through his attorney shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday and is now in custody at Anchorage Police headquarters. He was wanted in connection with the violent assualt of Kristen Reid, 30, who was found early Monday morning badly beaten in a ditch off of Fairbanks Street.

Police asked for help in locating Miftari who has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault, plus kidnapping and tampering with physical evidence. He was considered armed and dangerous and police suspected he might try to flee the state.

Miftari was tracked into the area of Old Seward and Grange Street around 9 p.m. Monday night but was not apprehended, although Alaska State Troopers' "Helo 1" helicopter provided aerial support and K-9 dogs were part of the ground search.

Reid and Miftari had been in a domestic relationship that Reid was trying to end, detectives learned during the course of the investigation. Miftari has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault, plus kidnapping and tampering with physical evidence.

Reid remains in critical condition at a local hospital. Detectives are still not releasing specific information related to Reid's injuries or whether or not a weapon was used in the attack against her.
