Police release further details on violent assault of Anchorage woman

Police released more details on Wednesday about the violent assault of Kristen Reid, an Anchorage woman who was found "clinging to life in a ditch" earlier this week.

Bukurim Miftari, 21, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, kidnapping and tampering with evidence in connection to the shooting of Reid, 30, earlier this week.

Miftari was arraigned Wednesday at the Anchorage Jail after turning himself in on Tuesday night. Reid remains hospitalized in critical condition. Police said the bullet remains lodged in her neck and she may not survive.

At 5:47 a.m. Monday police responded to a blue Chevy Tahoe parked suspiciously off Fairbanks Street, near its intersection with International Airport Road. Upon arrival officers found blood inside the vehicle and around it. A search of the area found Reid partially clothed, lying in a ditch suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Keys to the vehicle and a handgun were found nearby.

Police said Reid had visited a local nightclub late Sunday where she saw her former boyfriend, Miftari. Reid left the nightclub at 2 a.m. At some point in the early morning hours following her departure, Miftari found Reid at her apartment, brandished a gun and told Reid to come with him.

According to police, Miftari and Reid had been in a relationship that Reid was trying to end.

Detectives and officers from the Special Assignment Unit developed information on Miftari which lead them to a residence off of Old Seward Highway and Grange Street late Monday night. Miftari escaped out a back window when officers attempted to make contact with him.

Police established contact with Miftari on Tuesday night through his attorney. He was taken into police custody and later booked at the Anchorage Jail. No bail has been set.
