Reception Friday night for 'Snow Child' novelist Eowyn Ivey

The Alaska Humanities Forum will host a Meet the Author reception for Palmer writer Eowyn Ivey, whose debut novel "The Snow Child" has received praise and awards from several influential literary sources since its release in November.

Locally, "The Snow Child" was chosen by the Anchorage Public Library as the official 2013 selection for Anchorage Reads, a program that promotes literacy and community building through reading and discussion of a selected book. It's funded in part by a grant from the Alaska Humanities Forum.

The book takes its inspiration from a fairy tale about a child born from snow. Ivey's modern, adult retelling centers on Jack and Mabel, a pair of hardy homesteaders in 1920s Alaska, recent transplants from the Northeast U.S., whose lives take a magical turn. Read more here.

Meet Ivey 5:30-8 p.m. Friday Jan. 18 in Anchorage's historic Alaska Railroad freight depot building, 161 East First Ave. There will be light food and spirits.
