Salmon shocker: Nushagak River closed for kings

According to The Associated Press (via the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner), the Nushagak River (in Southwest Alaska, north of Dillingham) is closed for king salmon fishing. Last year, more than 81,000 kings were counted, but this year, the run is very late, and a biologist with Alaska Fish and Game says it likely won't show up. So far, with only 32,000 fish counted as of Wednesday, this year's run is the second worst on record. The worst was in 1986. The Nushagak is known worldwide for its king salmon sport fishery, and outfitters and guides are reeling from the closure. Read much more, here.
