Scam alert: Anchorage utility warns against fake Visa 'gift card'

On Monday, July 23, an Anchorage Municipal Light and Power (ML&P) employee reported a suspicious email prompting him to redeem a Visa gift card worth $1,000 online. Following a look into the unnamed employee's claim, ML&P confirmed the email was a scam and issued a public alert.

According to ML&P's Public Relations Manager Veronica Dent, the company has never offered such a promotion, or anything similar to it.

Dent said the initial ML&P employee is the only person that has yet reported an email of this kind. She added that ML&P has, to her memory, never been the target of anything like this. But she noted that this scam is similar to ones that have hit Tennessee, Texas, Florida, California and Illinois in the last few months.

Should you receive an email asking you to redeem a ML&P gift card you can report it to ML&P's customer Service desk at (907) 263-5340 or by email at askML&P(at)muni.org.
