Summer fireworks are lame

If you've lived in Alaska, you probably know that summer's long daylight hours make even the grandest Independence Day fireworks shows look pretty 'meh'. If you've lived in the Interior, you know you might as well save some money and throw a dozen flaming hot dogs in the air on the Fourth. According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, that's exactly what made Mike Thomas move his family's Fourth of July fireworks display to the dead of the Golden Heart's winter decades ago. Since then, the "Sparktacular" has become a tradition all of Fairbanks enjoys. Read more reminiscence from Thomas here. Alaska Beat had almost forgotten about that one year when the show was completely awesome (!) but really, really brief.
