Kiss autumn goodbye, Fairbanks. Alaska's second-largest city saw sub-zero temperatures for the first time Sunday night and Monday morning. By 10 a.m. Monday, the reading at Fairbanks International Airport was minus-2 F.
The average first day of below-zero temperatures in Fairbanks is Oct. 28, according to the National Weather Service.
A possible dip below zero was projected over the weekend by National Weather Service forecaster Ed Plumb, according to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. "It's definitely possible," he said.
Temperatures at the airport have dipped near zero lately, with 3-degree overnight readings on both Friday and Saturday, according to the News-Miner. Plumb said low cloud cover kept the temperatures from dipping below zero those days.
The earliest occurrence of zero or colder temperatures at the official Fairbanks weather station was on Oct. 3, recorded in 1909. The latest recorded date was on Nov. 22, 1926.
Anchorage may see single-digit lows during the evening this week, but the temperature shouldn't slip below zero.
