Troopers investigate death of inmate at Spring Creek

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation and Alaska State Troopers are investigating the death of Egan J. Tommy, a 24-year-old who was serving time in Spring Creek Correctional Facility in Seward. Tommy, who was convicted of a 2006 murder in Newtok, was found unresponsive in his cell on Aug. 31 around 6:20 p.m. According to a troopers dispatch: "Emergency medical measures were initiated, and Tommy was transported to a local hospital, where he was declared dead." Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters could not confirm whether or not Tommy's death is considered a murder, suicide or natural causes. The troopers and the ABI "get called to investigate any time there's a death like this, but there aren't many details available yet," Peters said.
