[Updated] Audition fever hits Anchorage

ARTS BRIEF: Dust off your head shots, actors: It's a big week for auditions in Anchorage.

Updated to correct the date of auditions for Peter Porco's "Wind Blown & Dripping." Those auditions will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, not Saturday, Nov. 7 as previously reported.

"Wonder of the World" by David Lindsey-Abaire

University of Alaska Anchorage

Saturday, Nov. 7, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., UAA Fine Arts Building room 220

UAA is casting three women and three men, ages 20 to 60, for this "wacky comedy." Comic monologues are encouraged but not required; come prepared to read from the script. Scripts are available for checkout (with a $10 deposit) from Anna in UAA Fine Arts Building room 302. Rehearsals begin in January; "Wonder of the World" runs Feb. 12-28, 2010. Out North calls "The Afterlife of the Mind," which debuted in the 2008 Last Frontier Theatre Conference play lab, a "hilarious and shocking comedy about neuroscience, metaphysics and sex." Roles are available for men and women in their 30s, 40s and 50s (as well as one role listed as "age indeterminable"). "Caroline, or Change" by Tony Kushner

Tuesday, Nov. 10, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Anchorage Opera, 1507 Spar Ave.

Teresa Pond directs Kushner's pop-blues musical, set in 1963 Louisiana. Roles are available for eight African-American women ages 18 to 60, one African-American male age 25 to 60, two African-American boys ages 7 to 12, two white women ages 25 to 65, three white men ages 30 to 65, and one white boy age 7 to 11. Come prepared with a song of your choice. "Caroline, or Change" runs May 7-30, 2010.

"Wind Blown & Dripping" by Peter Porco

Cyrano's seeks seven men in their early 20s, mid-30s and late 40s for the world premiere of Peter Porco's "Wind Blown & Dripping," the story of mystery writer Dashiell Hammett's days stationed at Adak, where he edited the post newspaper. Hammett would later go on to write "The Thin Man" and "The Maltese Falcon." Auditions will include cold readings from the script. "Wind Blown & Dripping" runs Jan. 15-31, 2010.
