Ted Stevens (1923-2010)

Vice President to attend Stevens' funeral

Updated at 4:33 p.m.: Vice President Joe Biden is expected to speak at Wednesday's funeral service at the Anchorage Baptist Temple.

Original story:

Asked whether anyone from the White House would be at this week's services honoring former U.S. Senator Ted Stevens, the White House press office replied with a one-sentence note: "On Wednesday, August 18th, the Vice President will travel to Anchorage, Alaska, to attend funeral services for Senator Ted Stevens."

No additional details were offered.

The day after Stevens and four others died in a plane crash near Dillingham, Biden offered his condolences.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to Catherine and all the Stevens children, as well as to the families of those also lost today in Alaska," he said in a prepared statement Aug 10th. "Jill and I had genuine affection for Ted. As Senators, he and I bonded over shared similar family tragedies, but we also celebrated life's great moments together too, like the births of our daughters a few days apart. We served together for more than 30 years, but more than that, he was my friend and I will miss him."
