Whitehorse hopes for bump in food bank donors after 4-day Alaska Highway closure

A 4-day road closure of the Alaska Highway at Watson Lake in mid-June has prompted Whitehorse councilor Dave Stockdale to pump up donation efforts at their local food bank, CBC reports. The road closure was caused by severe mudslides and washouts, which disrupted food delivery trucks, leaving the food bank with limited supplies for distribution to residents in need.

Stockdale told CBC that the Whitehorse food bank currently has about 300 monthly donors, but that his goal when he began sitting on the board at the Whitehorse Food Bank Society was to up those numbers to 500. "People do one-time donations and we have a bulk of money for a period of time, and then there are down periods," he told CBC on Sunday. "Well, we need to get that money coming in on a regular basis because the need doesn't go away."

The mission of Whitehorse Food Bank Society is to "provide emergency food to the hungry while supporting the greater effort to alleviate poverty," according to their website.
