Will Ron Paul win Alaska on Super Tuesday?

Who's going to win Alaska on Super Tuesday? Who knows. It's likely that each Republican candidate will probably pick up a few of the state's 27 delegates.

Alaska's delegates are proportionately divvied up according to how many votes each one gets.

In 2008, when Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee both sent campaign surrogates to Alaska, they came in first and second, respectively. It's safe to say that candidates who make the trip north fare better than those who don't.

Who's coming north this year? Ron Paul will be on the ground in Alaska this weekend, according to the Paul 2012 campaign. He'll be holding a rally in Fairbanks on Saturday, location and time to be announced. On Sunday, he'll be at the Dena'ina Convention Center starting at 6 p.m.

Mitt Romney's son has been to Alaska twice this campaign season on behalf of the former Massachusetts governor, who won more 49th state delegates than anyone else last go-round. Romney also enjoys the support of Alaska's Republican political establishment.

Newt Gingrich held a telephone townhall on Alaska energy issues Wednesday but isn't planning a trip to the state. Rick Santorum has reportedly been phoning into Alaska talk radio shows, but again, no plans to physically court Alaska's GOP voters.

Larry Sabato, a University of Virginia political expert often quoted, thinks Ron Paul will win the most delegates here next week. Take a look at how Sabato breaks out the numbers for Alaska and other Super Tuesday states on his political blog, Sabato's Crystal Ball.

Notably, Sabato reports Alaska as offering 24 delegates. Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich has told us that Alaska offers 27 delegates to the GOP National Convention.
