What’s happening around Anchorage: Catch a play, Rocktober, debate and Ha-Ha-Halloween

Curtains for local plays

As October comes to a close, so do the plays that entertained Anchorage for the last month. "Radium Girls," based on the true story of women fighting for justice after being exposed daily to radiation at work in the early 20th century, runs 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday at the UAA Fine Arts Building ($9.99-$19.99, 3550 Alumni Drive). "Man of La Mancha," based on the epic "Don Quixote," runs 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday at Glenn Massay Theater ($18-$21, 8295 E. College Drive). Lastly, "Church And State," the story of a conservative U.S. senator haunted by a mass shooting at a local elementary school, runs 7 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Alaska Experience Theatre ($8-$20, 333 W. Fourth Ave.).

'No Discretion Advised'

In this seven-act play by local playwright and actor Darryl Akins, a couple gets together looking for love and happiness — then things get complicated. Rocktober Halloween Bash

Spend Halloween weekend rocking out to classic tunes from Broadway's "Rock of Ages Band." Featuring original cast members from the Broadway production, the event will also feature the Conway Seavey Band as the local opener. Alaska Ethics Bowl

Is Donald Trump's travel ban unjust? Should we get rid of the electoral college? When is physician-assisted suicide just? Are rivers people? These are just some of the issues to be debated in this year's UAA Ethics Bowl. The one-day tournament will feature teams of students from UAA, UAF and APU debating these controversial cases in ethics. Halloween plays

TBA Theatre will present two plays this weekend celebrating Halloween. "Boris and Natasha's Goofy Gruesome Gathering" is about a couple having a major problem with their pumpkin patch, who call in all their friends to help. This all-ages show will also feature trick-or-treating, with the cast handing out candy after the show. Noon and 3 p.m. Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday; 6 p.m. Monday; and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. "Igor: The Butcher of Salzburg" closes its 11-day run this week with a special Halloween day presentation. Murder, mad science, grave-robbing and revivification are all themes explored in this dark psychological thriller. Scared Scriptless presents: Ha-Ha-Halloween

Join Alaska's longest-running improv comedy troupe, Scared Scriptless, for a night of tricks, treats, and laughs. Everything is made up on the spot and based on audience suggestions, so put on a costume and help make comedy gold.
