Matthew John Jones was found guilty Monday in Anchorage Superior Court of three counts of first-degree sexual assault, charges handed up nearly two years ago after the 26-year-old’s arrest in the early morning hours of Aug. 4, 2012.

His victim ran topless from the scene of the rape, underneath a downtown bridge, into a nearby hotel lobby.

Jones was also found guilty of harassment. The jury could not come to a decision on a second-degree assault charge, stemming from allegations Jones choked his victim...

A Fort Wainwright soldier was found dead in his barracks room early Thursday morning, according to a press release from U.S. Army Alaska.

Spc. Jason L. McCall, 24, was reportedly found by another soldier after he didn't show up for duty. The base's emergency services pronounced the young soldier dead at 7:09 a.m. on Thursday.

McCall arrived in Alaska in June 2012. He was an infantryman with C Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, which is part of the Army's 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division in Alaska.

McCall was from Brevard, N.C., and he attended basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. He entered the Army in February 2012.

The incident is still under investigation but foul play is not suspected, the press release said...

A Fort Wainwright soldier was found dead in his barracks room early Thursday morning, according to a press release from U.S. Army Alaska.

Spc. Jason L. McCall, 24, was reportedly found by another soldier after he didn’t show up for duty. The base’s emergency services pronounced the young soldier dead at 7:09 a.m. on Thursday.

A longtime Alaskan believed to be linked to laundering nearly $1 billion for the government of Iran stands to lose more than 20 Anchorage homes and condominiums that the U.S. attorney's office contends he bought with profits made trafficking money.

Alleged international profiteer Kenneth Zong ran the Phillips International Inn restaurant in Anchorage along with his wife, Kilja. They also operated the Trattoria Bella restaurant. Both eateries closed in 2006.

After that, Kenneth Zong became involved in trying to market surplus Alaska pink salmon to Korea, as well as various other businesses in the state. Other U.S. businesses in which Zong was involved are unknown, as are his exact whereabouts today...

A former maintenance man for the Petersburg City School District has pleaded guilty to possession and distribution of child pornography, the Alaska U.S. attorney said this week.

Petersburg resident Tye Leif Petersen, 46, agreed to plead guilty to three counts: distribution, receipt and possession of child pornography, according to a plea deal filed in federal court.

By accepting the plea, Petersen is giving up the right to appeal his conviction or the sentence imposed under the agreement. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both.

Petersen started working as maintenance director for the Southeast school district in 2002. He resigned Oct. 29, 2013, and headed for Juneau, where he was arrested...

A 20-year-old woman died of a single gunshot wound in a Hillside home early Thursday morning, police said, and her boyfriend is facing a murder charge in connection with her death.

Anchorage police officers responding to a 911 call early Thursday morning found Breanna Richelle Moore dead from a gunshot wound to the head, according to a statement from APD.

Moore’s boyfriend, Joshua Almeda, 22, was arrested Thursday morning. He faces charges of second-degree murder, misconduct involving a weapon, and theft.

Almeda is scheduled to appear in court Friday at the Anchorage jail courthouse. He is being held without bail.

Alaska State Troopers say they've located and recovered the body of a 17-year-old fisherman missing since Sunday morning. Troopers found the body of Casey Burt with the help of a village public safety officer during low tide at 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday.

The teenager went missing in the waters of the Ugashik River near the remote town of Pilot Point on the northern coast of the Alaska Peninsula when the skiff from which he and three others had been commercial fishing overturned and threw them overboard.

Troopers said winds in the area were estimated at 25 mph with stronger gusts, and waves were cresting at 4 feet...
