A Fairbanks man suffered serious injuries and spent a night outside over the weekend when he crashed his snowmachine and had to be rescued by the Alaska Air National Guard, Alaska State Troopers said.

In an online dispatch, troopers said they received a report at 9:55 p.m. Saturday that 65-year-old Gary Contento crashed his snowmachine about 1 mile south of the junction of the Tanana and Wood rivers.

Due to river conditions, weather, and darkness, troopers were unable to use their assets to rescue the man.

At 9:45 a.m. the next day, the Alaska Air National Guard's 210th Rescue Squadron from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, was able to locate Contento, land at the crash site and fly him to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital...

No one was injured in a small plane accident near the Parks Highway in the Talkeetna area Sunday afternoon, Alaska State Troopers said.

In an online dispatch, troopers wrote that a Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub was attempting to take off at a runway within a mile of the Parks Highway near Mile 95 when the plane hit a rut, which caused its right wing to strike a berm.

The pilot, 46-year-old Toby Ashley of Idaho, and a passenger troopers didn't identify, were uninjured in the crash, but the Super Cub's right wing “sustained significant damage,” troopers said.

Princess Cruises will have one less ship gliding through Alaska waters in 2016.

Only six ships will voyage through Alaska that year, one ship fewer than in 2015, when the company will transfer a 672-passenger vessel to Europe, in a move first reported in USA Today Thursday.

The loss of the ship, the smallest the company operates in Alaska, will mean a 15 percent decrease to the amount of sailings in 2016 compared to this year, Princess Cruises confirmed. There will be 125 sailings this year and only 106 Alaska sailings next year.

But Princess Cruises spokesperson Karen Candy said it isn’t unusual for the company to adjust its global fleet and removing one vessel from the Alaska fleet isn’t a reflection of dwindling passenger numbers...

Three Anchorage men were convicted Wednesday for their roles in a 2012 home invasion and robbery, the Anchorage District Attorney’s Office said.

Alaska State Troopers said a man who led authorities on a pursuit down the Seward and Sterling highways over the weekend and escaped custody by fleeing into the woods was arrested Wednesday in Wasilla, after the official search for him had been called off.

Tanner had a warrant out for his arrest tied to parole violations stemming from original charges of theft, forgery and misconduct involving a controlled substance...

Traffic is moving again on the Knik River Bridge, after a car fire that closed the bridge to motorists in both directions for a time Tuesday morning, the Anchorage Police Department said.

There were no reports of injuries, and delays caused by the single-vehicle fire should soon clear, police said.

The vehicle was headed inbound when it caught fire and forced the driver to pull over, said department spokesperson Anita Shell.

Shell suggested the fire may have been caused by something electrical.

Firefighters from the Chugiak Fire Department responded to the scene Tuesday morning, along with Anchorage Police and Alaska State Troopers, police said.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
