Following his Aug. 19 loss in an acrimonious Republican primary election for the right to take on incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, Alaska Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell has gotten back to business in his role as the state's top election official. Recently, he led a series of public hearings around the state addressing three ballot initiatives -- on legalizing marijuana, increasing the minimum wage and limiting large-scale mining in Southwest Alaska...

Three Alaska political veterans said this week they were considering entering the race for Anchorage mayor, with the election six months away.

Republican Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell, Democratic state Sen. Hollis French and former gubernatorial candidate and GOP state representative Andrew Halcro all said they were thinking about bids for the city’s highest elected office, which is currently held by Dan Sullivan.

Sullivan, a Republican, is running for lieutenant governor in this November’s election, and even if he loses, term limits bar him from seeking a third three-year term as mayor.

Two major candidates have already said they’re running: Assemblywoman Amy Demboski, who’s a Republican, and independent Dan Coffey, an attorney and a former Assemblyman...

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro appeared in Anchorage on Monday at a series of public events, including a news conference with Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Begich.

Castro is the latest in a string of President Barack Obama’s Cabinet members to visit Alaska and hold public appearances with Begich, a boost to the incumbent senator locked in a tight re-election battle against Republican challenger Dan Sullivan...

Few people on the U.S. Senate campaign trail in Alaska would dispute that the incumbent Democrat in the race, Mark Begich, will talk to just about anyone -- even to conservative talk radio hosts, whose shows Begich is known to call on a whim.

As for Begich’s opponent, Republican nominee Dan Sullivan? That depends on who you ask.

Sullivan’s campaign cites the eight debates in which he’s scheduled to appear before Election Day. And it argues Sullivan has been open and transparent with the press from “day one” -- though he refused to take questions from media at his campaign kickoff a year ago.

“Dan has been very accessible to the media throughout the entire campaign,” his campaign manager, Ben Sparks, said in an interview...

ADAK -- This Aleutian island is 1,200 miles from Anchorage, and it might as well be in a different country, but a mileage ticket on Alaska Airlines makes a trip affordable. There's more than enough to explore in the island's abandoned military infrastructure -- which once housed 6,000 troops -- and thousands of acres of tundra to keep visitors entertained for a long weekend...

KODIAK - A sharp, wide-ranging debate on Alaska fisheries Wednesday evening saw organizers and Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Begich put Republican challenger Dan Sullivan on the defensive over his pro-development record, with Sullivan delivering some targeted shots of his own to keep Begich from getting too comfortable.

In the two candidates’ first joint public appearance in more than a month, Sullivan, a former state attorney general and natural resources commissioner, faced probing questions from Begich and a panel of fisheries journalists on his position on the controversial Pebble mine project in Southwest Alaska, as well as on the potential for oil and gas extraction from the same area, which one panelist referred to as the nation’s “fish basket.”...

The difference in reception for the two U.S. Senate candidates was stark.

The Republican, Dan Sullivan, got 45 minutes Friday morning to make his pitch to the United Fishermen of Alaska’s board of directors in a dimly lit hotel conference room in Anchorage -- a pitch that at best would draw just a few votes away from his opponent, incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, whom the group had endorsed months earlier.

Begich, by contrast, was invited to give the keynote address Friday night at the UFA’s glitzy 40th anniversary banquet, where he presented a fish-centric stump speech and described how he’d gone to bat for attendees by fighting against genetically modified salmon and illegal fishing in Alaska waters...

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dan Sullivan confirmed his general election debate schedule Tuesday, setting up seven matchups with incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Begich before Election Day.

--Oct. 23 forum in Anchorage hosted by the Resource Development Council, an industry group that supports development of natural resources

--Oct. 24 forum in Anchorage hosted by the Alaska Federation of Natives

A review by Maryland officials into property tax breaks received in that state by Alaska Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dan Sullivan has found the tax breaks were appropriately granted.

In an emailed statement Tuesday, the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation said Sullivan, who received the tax breaks while working at the U.S. State Department and living in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Bethesda between 2006 and 2008, accurately declared Maryland his principal residence during that period -- a finding likely to provide ammunition to Sullivan's opponents...

Alaska Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dan Sullivan was spotted Monday raising money for his campaign in Ohio by a Democratic opposition research organization, American Bridge 21st Century.

The Washington Post reported that Sullivan , who has faced questions from Democrats about his Alaska bona fides, was captured on video at the Cleveland Union Club by American Bridge.

A spokesman for Sullivan, Mike Anderson, said Sullivan has had a series of fundraisers outside Alaska...
